Breathe Right Nasal Strips

I recently received a couple of samples of Breathe Right nasal strips in the mail, along with a coupon to buy more. Well, I won't be using that particular coupon after giving this product a try.

I had seen ads about these strips on TV and read a few reviews about how effective they were for some consumers who had tried them. I had good expectations about giving these a try too. I don't have serious breathing issues, but there are times (especially when the air is very dry) that I could definitely breathe better at night, to help with my sleep.

In a nutshell, here's what they are suppose to do:

From the Amazon product page-Breathe Right nasal strips can provide temporary relief from nasal congestion and stuffiness and may also reduce or eliminate snoring. Breathe Right nasal strips open your nose to help you breathe better so you can sleep better.

And what did these "magical" strips actually do for me?

Nothing, nada...no difference at all!

I had two samples so Joe my husband tried one as well. Same thing, nothing, no difference. We both were careful to apply the strips exactly as directed. Absolutely nothing!

And to remove these afterwards, ouch!!!! They really stuck on and how! If someone wasn't careful to wet the edges of these strips before trying to remove, they could actually harm the skin on their nose quite easily.  Also, the ones we got (the regular colored strips) are made of latex rubber so again, something to take note of, for allergies etc. They do have other types of these (clear ones, different sizes...)so the rubber content may or may not be a problem for all the types of these strips.

I would be interested to hear about your own experiences with Breathe Right strips if you've tried them. I don't like to use the "scam" word but in my opinion, that's close to what these are, based on my experience.

If something can actually open up a person's nasal passages effectively enough to make a significant difference in their breathing, would it not take more than a thin bandaid-type of rubber strip to achieve this? Maybe a lot of the good hype about these is perhaps some wishful thinking thrown in. It's not pleasant to try to sleep with a congested nose. Perhaps some "mind over matter" or placebo effect is at work, when people feel so much better with one of these stuck to their nose! I don't know.

What I do know, I'm glad these were samples and not something I spent money on. I'd rather put $$$ towards an air purifier or a facial sauna to help relieve nasal congestion.

If it's a continuous and/or serious issue(s) maybe it's time to talk to a doctor or other health care professional about it. They call it the "breath of life" for very good reasons. Not something to ignore.

Overall rating for this product: BAD. 0 out of 5.

  1. I can vouch for this, they didn't do anything. I also wondered what kind of adhesive they use on these, they were very hard to remove. Save your money.

    1. I am using the Breath Right (the clear, hard plastic kind) strips for the first time right now, and I am thrilled. I am 24 but have had a bad history of narrow sinuses with frequent infection. I had the 'roto-rooter' surgery to open my sinuses up, and that helped with infection, but not daily breathing through my nose.

Trying to breath through my nose is like being underwater and breathing through a straw...you have to go up for air every few seconds. I'm not a 'mouth breather', but sometimes I feel like I'm suffocating.

I've used sprays (Afrin), which help, but then the rebound congestion from them is worse than before. I am really thrilled about these strips. Typing this, I haven't had to open my mouth once to catch my breath.

This is really amazing for me. I'm ecstatic that I found these strips.

    2. Yes, I'm guessing those who got no benefit from using these strips don't need them. I've found them a blessing, except for morning redness - which is how I discovered this page, searching for a possible answer. (From Sandra)

    3. They saved my life. Had surgery 8 months ago and couldn't breathe out of right side. At long last I can breathe. Also have left it on for 12 hours with no bad side effects. I tried Walmart strips and guess what? They work even better.

    4. They are WONDERFUL !!! The extra strength stays on and I can breathe . I have even used them around the house during the day to open up my passages !!!

    5. I actually really like these strips, maybe it will help sine more than others. I do have a deviation in my nose & if i sleep on that side i can't breath through my nose@ all, & these help open my nose a lot....but, lol, I use the CVS or Walgreens brands & not just 4 the price diff. U are not kidding about the pain of taking the brand name off, holy duct tape on my nose!! I do not have that issue w/ off brands, if ur skin is oily then maybe the adhesive strengtg would help all night wear, but for my the milder stuff is just fine & not painful 1st thing in the AM. Also, if i use the brand name strips more that 1-2 nights in a row, my nose breaks out in lil red allergic bumps or white heads, the pimples i blame again on the too-strong adhesive & our inability to remove it all. I again do not have this problem w/ other off brand strips. So, my consensus: Strips; yes 4 me! Breath Right strips: save $ & the skin on ur nose & buy another kind! Lol

    6. I have had trouble breathing through my nose especially at night when sleeping so bad to the point I had to go to the emergency room just now. I've been using different nasal sprays and pulls with no help. The doctor said I probably have a deviated septum and just have to deal with it until I see a specialist and maybe get surgery. I was always skeptical of breathe right strips and thought they couldn't possibly work. Well I'm laying here amazed and ecstatic about how well I'm breathing through my nose with it on. Amazing.

    7. I had used the strips a few years ago. I have permanent damage in the area where the skin was pulled off. That area is slightly discolored and reacts to sunlight by getting crusty and takes time healing. This is a permanent problem to deal with. Skin graft will not be an option.

  2. Thank you for this. I had wondered if they were any good. How disappointing. Think I might invest in an air purifier instead.

    1. I'd say you might want to try them for yourself as I personally find them very helpful. I have both allergies and a deviated septum and they, alone, grant me a good nights sleep.

  3. Hi Joe, Yes, they were very hard to remove, I agree. An all-around loser of a product I think.

Hi Sel, I was hoping these would work great too. Unfortunately that didn't happen. I agree, an air purifier would be a much better investment. And they are getting cheaper and better all the time.

    Happy Week, G

  4. Hi, you need a reaction box which reads: incredulous. I would have checked it. I tried these for the first time last night and for the first time in almost 2 years, slept through the night thanks to the strip. I did have a little bit of sticky goo on my nose for a few minutes upon waking up in the morning but it wiped right off. It opened up my nasal passages just a wee bit, enough to be able to sleep through the night without tossing and turning and waking up with gunk-mouth due to breathing through my mouth. I wish I had tried these ages ago! If you don't have any problems breathing through your nose (deviated septum, myriad of other problems, etc.), then, no -- of course you are not going to notice a difference. A difference of what? You have nothing to compare the new sensation to, silly! To anyone who reads this review: call or email the company to get their free sample and try it for yourself! Also, many stores have their own store-brand strips that are not so expensive. I'm going to buy a box tomorrow. Sweet dreams!! From, Cathryn

  5. Hi Cathryn, Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you found these strips helpful. Of course, some people do or they wouldn't be selling any, would they? If you read my complete review, you will note that I did say I have some issues with breathing at night, at some times. As far as these strips making any improvement, I didn't note any difference at all, my husband didn't either. It's not about being silly either. But thanks for your feedback and for bringing a smile to my evening, reading your comment.

    1. Hi Geraldine, because like you I too have a breathing problem and I could not use the CPAP I have tried everything else including the strips. Unfortunately I am alergic to whatever they use as glue so I have not been able to use them. I found out something that helps me to some extent and I understand that your dentist may have some type of an appliance for this. I try to line my teeth top over bottoms and as straight as I can side to side. I am very aware of this and I wish I could sleep better but compare with how it was before this is great for me!I hope this helps

  6. PS: Just recently I found and tried a natural remedy for sinus congestion that really worked for me:

You can find the recipe for Tomato "Tea" over at the Earth Clinic. Here's the link:

    http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/sinus_congestion.html#TOMATOTEA

It may sound like a strange combo of ingredients but I found real relief, after only one serving of this tea, I was breathing much better and my sinus headache disappeared. Bliss!

If you read the comments over there, you'll probably find one you can relate to. A lot of people have found this helpful. I hope you do too.

  7. Hey, I have used these strips and they worked for me!!! i have terrible colds in the winter, massive tonsils, regular tonsillitis, asthma, nasal polyps.. you name it, i tried these and they helped my sleep apnea quite alot, i often have trouble breathing in the night at winter and sometimes don't sleep until 3 or 4am.. these help me along with steam, i think they're quite good, i hope one day to have my tonsils and adenoids removed though.. that will stop my sleep apnea.

    1. If I was not alergic to the glue I would use them also but, as it is I can't. I was looking for a substitute that might use some other type of glue. I too have sleep apnea and I am overweight which does not help at all. However I had my tonsills out and it still not helping. I just sent Geraldine a reply about how I position my teeth when I go to bed at night. Hope that helps you also.

  8. What a waste of a product. Breath Right strips DO NOT work what so ever to "reduce or eliminate snoring" I will be sure to let others know that they DO NOT work and to not waste money on them!

    1. They don't work for you. They do work for other people like me. I don't find them a waste of money as I can now sleep through the night without snoring. My husband can sleep through the night without listening to me snore. Not everything works for every person. Gosh - I would hate to be your doctor if he ever gave you advice or a prescription that didn't work perfectly on you.

  9. Used for the first time recently. Woke up & my nose was in extreme pain & swollen. I had so much mucus in the inner corners of my eyes and a migraine! Almost went to the doctor, but decided to take motrin for pain & swelling. I threw away the box & will never use again. My nose bridge is still swollen & after 2 weeks & i'm still suffering from headaches. It works by stretching the nose bridge skin & tissue upward. I feel stupid, thought it would be medicated. My nose still hurts so its not worth injuring yourself to stop snoring. The nose pain, swelling and headaches are worse to suffer from than occasional snoring. Just using the one strip, I feel like i've been punched in the nose everyday and my sinuses are now inflamed causing me not to breath as well as I am used to during the day & night. I plan to go to an ear, nose throat doctor if it doesn't get better to see if I can fix the damage.

  12. I have a badly deviated septum, and can breathe much easier at night with these. One side of my nostril is basically collapsed inside,, and the strip helps keep it open. I cannot breathe AT ALL out of that side without them. I think it just depends on what's wrong with you, how effective you'll find them. I sleep so much better now, especially since I hate breathing out of my mouth when sleeping.

  13. They work really well for me. Instant difference after putting one on. I have serious sinus issues and didn't even know it was possible to breath like this until recently. To all of those people who say they don't do anything: You probably don't have anything wrong with you (at least not what this product is intended to fix). Be grateful! After trying these out I would probably walk around with them all day if they didn't look so silly.

  14. Have been using them for three days and have slept better than I have for years. Follow the directions on the box. Put a dab of moisturizer on the bridge of your nose where the center of the strip would be. Remove the strip after you've been in the shower for a bit. Great product!

  16. Hello to all the Anonymous visitors, There certainly seems to be a diversity of opinion, regarding this product. For the people who have tried these and found them helpful, I'm glad. Personally as I shared above, I didn't find that they did anything at all. I still wonder if some of the positive effects that some people note are not actually a case of "mind over matter" and a placebo effect. Again, if it's helpful for you and you don't mind paying for these strips, go for it.

Thanks for your comments and visits, G

    1. Thanks for your review G. I have used these for months and love them. Maybe I have just enough oil in my skin to allow them to adhere, but also to make them easily removed?? Even though they don't help some people with snoring (Amazon said "may help"), that does not make the product is bad....they help me breathe much better, whether or not I am congested.

I found your review a bit negative. Your "scam" remark is obviously untrue given the level of success for the strips. I have read other sites and the majority of users love them.

Just because you don't understand how they work, doesn't mean they are not good. Your remarks with words like "hype", "mind over matter", "placebo" are misplaced, misleading, and just unfair.... and show close-mindedness.

Simple is beautiful in this case. By lifting my nostrils, the strips help me get 25% to 40% air...and I measured that. The larger a person's nose overhangs the end of the bone, the more the airflow will increase. I sleep so much better...and so do many others. My wife is also much happier.

I am not trying to slander you, but want to be open and honest. I love the product.

      sincerely,
      Big Lou

  20. I have used Breathe Right for a couple of years and they really help me sleep better. Recently, however, they have changed the formula on the adhesive and I got a severe skin reaction with redness, itching, swelling that lasted a number of days. I went back to the "Original Tan" and am still able to use them. Unfortunately I noticed that the drugstores are now carrying the "new" original tan. I am really sorry that they tried to "improve" a product that worked really well.

  21. Across the bridge of the nose, sure, I don't see how they would have much of an effect because there's cartilidge or bone between the skin and the airway there. So I would probably agree that placebo is going on for the older strips. But I just bought some of their "advanced" strips, which appear to both go across the bridge of the nose as well as down to the nostrils. I can see where pulling on the skin on the nostrils would open up the airways just a bit more. So maybe those work better. Maybe that's the kind that "Anonymous" was using? I haven't tried them yet myself, probably won't until I have a need. I just got them because they were a buck each after coupons and rebate at Rite Aid yesterday, today and tomorrow.

  22. as with everything else, one should do your homework before using or ingesting products. nowhere does this product claim to rid snoring. if you have issues which may need to try this, it depends on what is causing your problems. if allergens are related to what still is in your home, dont expect miracles, same applies with your general health. I have allergies which dictate a daily dose of preventative meds. because I decided to try these to see it would help in extending my sleep. it did so by opening up my airways. i was surprised at how well it worked. used them for a week now. PLEASE read the paperwork in the box. it you are allergic to latex or glue, try using it for 48 hours on a different part of the body for reactions. I am hypersensitive to makeup and some glues and latex, but not this. go figure. and if you follow the directions for removal it should.be no problem. expecting to rip it from a sensitive face where the glue is meant to safely bond in order to work is.the key. i have no problem removing it when I wash my.face or shower. remember too to wash and dry your face beforehand too or the natural oils will hamper sticking.

  23. I have a nose injury from a childhood accident and my nostrils just collapse when I lay on my side. I clean my nose with alcohol, put a small piece of tissue on the bridge of my nose to protect it and apply the strip. It keeps my nose open all night. I can breathe so easy using the strip. They can irritate the skin of your nose but you can use lotion or skin prep to protect the skin. I think Breathe Right Strips are wonderful. I was always flipping back and forth to find the position with the nostril most open but with the strip in place my nose is wide open no matter what position I am in. I have a small nose so I must buy the smaller strips and the new heavy duty strips are just too much.

  24. if you're prone to allergic reactions to latex adhesive, before using these on your face stick one to your forearm for a few hours. Or else you might end up with redness and swelling that can last a few days.

  25. I've been using these for 3 days & they are a Godsend! I've been using afrin for 2 years because of chronic & substantial sinus issues. It got really bad & I finally went & saw an ENT...she said basically tough. And I'd be miserable for the next few months. I read about the strips online & I was able to breathe instantly. I'm 5 months pregnant, so I'm limited in what I can do. Surgery is certainly in my future but these work great for now. I wish I would have used earlier before I caused pain & damage from nose spray simply trying to breathe & sleep at night. (of course rebound effect made all issues worse) I haven't even been tempted to use spray in 3 days. Removing strips can be tricky but it's covered in the directions. I skipped them initially. For my sinus problems they work perfectly. (because of rebound effect & issues I am completely blocked when I remove them)

  26. I used it last night and for some odd reason awoke to a very swollen nose and sinus area. Not sure why that would be? I felt the way the strip pulled how it opened up my sinuses. I was impressed. So I am confused as to why the swelling. Not a reaction to the strip itself. Seriously folks, the strips are NOT that difficult to remove, by the way. Maybe older folks skin can be a bit delicate. If anyone has any ideas, please share. I am on antibiotics for sinus infection so is it possible that it has something to do with that?

  27. I have used this item for over a year. They work wonderfully to open up your nose--at a price. I slowly eroded the skin on my nose and did a great deal of damage to my nose skin. I scratched my nose this evening and caused bleeding. It bled for hours before I could get it to stop. I could only trace this to the daily pulling off of the breathe right strips and the damage to the skin of my nose it must have caused. I hate to dis this product as it works wonderfully but I suggest to use it only occasionally and not daily as the adhesive will severely damage your nose skin over time.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree this item is for occasional use only. I used them for over two years daily and eventually eroded the skin of my nose so much it bled and bled and took weeks to heal. However this product works wonderfully. Only use it when you really need it to open your nose once in a while and not nightly like I and anonymous 2/27 did. Excellent product just do not use daily.

  30. I have just started useing the breath right strips (the regular ones). I will admit that I do have slight brusing on the top of my nose so I tried not to touch the middle part down when applying the sides. it does eventually touch but not so rough. It did help a little with the bruse. I do get a lot of breathing realief. I then tried using the advanced one in clear. I like it so far.it has a wider plastic piece connecter. its kind of like the difference between a bra with a speghetti strap vs a bra with a wider strap, it dosen't dig into the skin as bad. I almost don't want to ever take it off. I like breathing. It works but it isn't invisible, looks dorky.

  31. I used the Advanced Strips for the first time last night. They did enable me to breathe a little better, and I had no trouble removing the strips in the shower this morning; however, when I woke up this morning my sinuses were completely blocked and they are still much worse than they usually are at this time of the day...4 hours after waking.

It is very frustrating as I was hoping that his would really help me. I found out from the ear, nose, throat specialist yesterday that I have polyps on my right side as well as nasal valve collapse. http://www.nycfacemd.com/nasal-valve-collapse-and-treatment/

He was the one who actually recommended the breath right strips. I am scheduled for a cat scan in a few weeks, and possibly surgery if nothing else helps. He suggested low dose aspirin to shrink the polyps, but I first have to be tested to see if I am allergic to aspirin.

This is really getting tiresome, because otherwise, I am extremely fit.

  36. My husband had been snoring really badly for the past week due to a cold, and it has woken me up multiple times during the night.

I forced a Breathe Right Nasal Strip (the clear, regular-sized one for Sensitive Skin) on him last night - I was worried that he wouldn't be able to sleep with something on his nose but he slept fine. & amazingly, I slept fine as well. He hardly made a sound - I'm sure he was still snoring but it wasn't loud enough to wake me.

When I was up getting ready for work, I was keeping an eye (& ear) on him but there was not a peep at all in that hour.

I didn't see him having trouble removing it either. Shortly after he got up, I realised he already had it removed, was examining it in his hand & wondering how the strip actually works.

I think it's amazing, & he'll have to wear this everytime he has a cold.

  37. I find the Breathe Right Nasal Strips work very well for me. The only problem I have is removing them in the morning. I get a washcloth, get it wet with as hot water as I can stand and press it on my nose, over the strip, while I brush my teeth. I use an electric toothbrush for about 4 or 5 minutes. The hot, wet washcloth helps, but I still get red and mildly sore if I use the strips every night. Is there another way to remove them that works better and doesn't hurt?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think they did help a bit with my husbands snoring. We use a humidifier for noise, cut his nose hairs and I wear earplugs. They are overpriced for certain, so we spent about $200 on them without determining if they work so we gave them up. A box of good quality of 50-100 bandages cost about $3-4, yet these are $1 each, so even if they do help, they are not worth the high cost.

  39. I use these all the time in singing to open the nasal passages. They do work really well for singers with chronic nasal allergies

  40. I have never sent a review before, but could not help answering some of the negative remarks. I have been using this product for about 2 weeks to prevent heavy snoring due to a deviated septum. I have found that I can use it every 2-3 nights with good results. My husband asked me this morning if I had used it last night as I was snoring. I had not used it in about 4 nights. It does make my nose sore if I use it every night.

  41. I have problems sleeping due to my nasal passages blocking up, forcing me to breathe through my mouth, and awakening with the dry mouth. My ENT tells me I have a deviated septum, possibly from an injury long ago. I tried these strips years ago when they first came out and wasn't really impressed with the results. Over the years I have used way too much of the nasal spray to the point that I was getting the rebound effect. Last week I saw the Breathe Right Extra, which is promoted as being 50% stronger, so I bought a box of 10 for a try. Well trust me, these things have worked great for opening my nasal passages over a week now. This is NOT a placebo affect, I breathe from my nose all night long, much better sleep and no dry mouth. Would leave it on all day if it didn't look so silly.

  42. They work for me, 4 days a week I get up at 4 am and if I use this product I get up ready to get going. If I do not use the product I really struggle with waking up and starting the day. The other 3 days I use nothing and don't get out of bed until after 7. These little strips seem to be substituting for 3 hours of sleep. After about 60 of these strips I am convinced. Now that I have found a reason for being so tired in the morning I am going to see a doctor to explore a permanent solution.

  43. If you know anything about physics, you would know that you cannot place an adhesive bandage on your nose and have it lift your nostrils open. However, I do not want to get into a debate with those who feel that they provide some relief for them. If it works for you, whether it's mind over matter, your imagination or something else, good for you.

    1. Physics would dictate that an item with structure to it, when applied to a substrate, will want to pull that substrate with it to return to it's natural form. Maybe you have never tried the strips and wanted to talk bad with no experience, but there is a base of 3 or 4 thin hard plastic "rods" that are not designed to be flexible - these are inside the strip, and when the strip is adhered to the nose, the plastic tries to return to it's natural state by pulling the nose upwards and out.

So remind me how "if you knew anything about physics" that these would not work?

  44. I was born with very narrow nostrils and over the years it has gotten worse with age. When I use the strips it opens my nostrils so that breathing for me is effortless and I can sleep well as I did as a child. My breathing issues were causing a lot of stress and also palpitations but when I started using these it all went away. I would say that for people like me this product is a minor miracle.

  45. These things simulate what the breathing conditions might be in heaven!! So open, so many new smells, such easy breathing, reduction of headaches... Do they have permanent ones yet!?! I would highly recommend!!

  47. Thanks to all the people who have shared their personal experiences, using these nasal strips. Obviously, they seem to be helpful for many people, which is great.

Keep the (genuine) comments and experiences coming! It's interesting reading, in spite of my own personal lack of confidence in these strips. ;-)

  48. My wife and I have been using these for over two months. Before, I'd wake up breathing through my mouth and having one nostril blocked. Of course it was on the side I sleep on. With the strips, no problems and I sleep better then I've done for years. Placement of the strips is important. Too low or too high, the effectiveness is reduced. What I have noticed is that the sinuses seem more open and "dryer"

    1. I have the same issue, the strips were a miracle fix to my snoring. My wife (who is a somewhat light sleeper) can now sleep through the night and my quality of sleep has greatly improved... however the one side effect seems to be a sore throat every morning now. I guess it's the increased air flow drying out the top of my throat, but I don't know how to fix it. I'm willing to suffer through the sore throat if it keeps my lady from being an insomniac.

  49. I have always noticed that my left nostril was not as easy to get air through but kind of dealt with it. THEN I got a horrible sinus infection and found this product in my pharmacy. I tried it and I could not believe the difference in the nasal breathing and the ease of getting nasal spray UP TO THE RIGHT SPOT in my nose for it to be more effective ! Thank you for this. No surgery for me ! None needed ! I am old and it is not a pleasant thought to even think about nasal adjustment. Please keep these available ! I am serious.

  50. I have never tried the Breathe Right brand, but I've used the Life brand from Shopper's Drug Mart only twice now and I think I'm addicted...I have a rather severe deviated septum- causing both nostrils to be obstructed. I'm always sniffing and snorting trying to just clear them, and when I lay down to fall asleep it feels particularly worse. As soon as this is applied, I feel like I'm really truly breathing. It's in no way perfect, but wow, I seriously recommend at least just trying this if you have issues breathing properly. It doesn't cost much- and if it doesn't work, at least you tried something. On another note, if you have any troubles breathing, see your doctor! I'm due to get surgery next year and cannot wait.

  51. I started using the strips when I was about 25 and have continued to wear one every night since then (I am now 45). My nostrils are very small and my nose runs non-stop which makes it almost impossible to get a decent night's sleep. I am so grateful for this product because I can finally breathe!!!! The first night I wore one was heaven. I just wish they were cheaper. Pretty sure I've spent a small fortune on these over the past 20 years.

  52. I am allergic to latex and I bought some latex free paper tape and put it on my nose in the measurement I needed and it worked great! No allergic reaction, and a thousand times cheaper than those strips. Try it - you won't believe how well it works.

    1. Anonymous is this a joke? There are no solid plastic bars in tape of any kind to "ping" open your nostrils. How is having something just stuck to your skin going to open the nostrils?
I've used clear Breathe Right every night for many years with no problems and great benefit. I can't breathe properly without them due to an old injury

  53. I've been using the strips for years and cannot sleep comfortably without them. The latest batch are giving me issues because the adhesive becomes detached from the top of the strip during the night. I think that there was something wrong with the batch that I got. The number on the strip is 433502QD15. Is there something wrong with the batch that I got?

  54. I've used these strips before and I do think they work I've used them when I'm sick but only minutes after I have to remove it bc they cause burning in my sinuses that makes me prefer the stuffiness. Like at the moment I'm fighting a cold and don't have any medicine and would even try one of the strips if I had one but I would most likely have to take it off bc of the burning sensation. Not sure if I'm allergic to something in the strips or if the burning sensation is supposed to happen and is just too strong for me. Too bad though, they do actually clear up congestion until that pain kicks in.

  55. Breathe Right strips are better than other devices available. The only problem is the potential to develop an allergy to latex or the glue they use.
I used these strips for years and they were fantastic. Unfortunately, I developed an allergy to them and when I contacted the company, they did not address this potential allergy.
These work extremely well, unless you develop an allergy which shows as redness on or around the nose area, plus around the mouth area. It starts out as feeling like the area around the nose has 'cat' hairs on it, in other words, a sensitivity or a sense of nerve endings sensitized.
Its is disappointing to have developed an allergy to these strips, and in particular for the company to have dismissed my questions to them when they could have suggested I had developed an allergy to their product or their glue.
Simply said: beware if you see signs of sensitivity to any area around the nose. Otherwise this is the best product on the market for addressing a deviated septum problem.

  56. I just tried these for the very first time. I bought the MUCH cheaper Equate brand on Walmart.com. The clear are size Med which is what I got & need. Large is flesh color. I have sensitive skin and lots of allergies. I had no problems. I did as others said to those who complained that this cheaper brand peeled off in a few hours. I washed my nose with soap, dried it. Then cleansed it with alcohol on a cotton ball (I had no witch hazel). Again, dried it thoroughly. I crimped the nasal strip (slight fold) in the middle before applying it. I then applied where they tell you to and pressed it on my nose & held it for longer than the 30 seconds stated. Immediately my passages opened. I have a deviated septum and allergies year round... I don't ever remember being able to breath this well in my life! It stayed on till I took it off, after 11 hours (as they state not to leave it on 12 or more hours). It peeled off easily... no pain at anytime and it did not leave any residue on my nose as some seem to complain about with the Breath Right Brand clear. I guess these work for many but not all. Try the cheaper brand first if you're skeptic. I paid $6.97 for 30 strips. Merry Christmas!

  57. I had migraines for years and also sinus problems. I have been using the strips and no longer have these issues.
I used to have migraines meds. 4 to 5 times a week. No long have to.
I feel one coming on and put a strip on right away and the migraine does not happen.

I tried 2 Advil and a Breathe Right strip a few days ago when I felt a migraine coming on and it actually went away! The same thing happened the next day, then the next. I'm looking forward to finding out it if will continue to be effective! WHOOHOO!!!

    1. Dear Chris
This is not what the strips do at all and no, pushing down on the bridge of your nose does not open your nasal passages. The strips pull the skin where they attach (each end) upwards thus opening the nostrils. It's the solid strips that do the job, I would have thought that this was obvious but clearly not so.

  59. The Breathe Easy Nose strips (even the generic ones) helped me breathe easier at night. The only downfall which caused me to have to stop using them completely is I'm allergic to adhesive. At first I wasn't sure what caused horrible hives. After the hives cleared up in a week and on Prednisone for the allergic reaction I tried the strip one night just to see if maybe it might have been something else. Next morning I woke up with hives and am now certain this is what is is. Sad because if they would make them for those allergic to adhesive and use a different material....I'd buy them and use them again. I get migraines and especially at night they helped keep my sinus' open.

    1. You do not need to go on Prednisone. Simply use an over the counter allergy pill (same as for seasonal allergies) and avoid using chlorinated water on your face. Use spring water to wash your face and no soap. Dab the area with aloe vera and use a quality moisturizer if required (eg Clinique) on the surrounding area.
      Prednisone is a steroid!!!!

    2. The breathe right strips that come in clear don't have latex and don't bother my skin. Be sure, when you're removing the strip, to use warm water and a little bit of soap and the strip will come off easily after about 15 seconds.

  61. for sure BRs are not a placebo effect, they expand your nose nostrils, just look in the mirror! I've been using them since March, so much more air goes into the nose when wearing them, without them there is not enough air in my nose to fall asleep.

  62. When I first tried the strips years ago, they didn't help much, but I tried them again yesterday and this time I placed them high up on my nose, to open up my sinuses, and they work great there! The top of the strip sits just below the bottom of my glasses. I'm wearing them all day now, I love it so much. (I don't leave the house, lol.)

  63. had migraines 3 to 4 times a week every time I woke up. After 3 weeks using strips not one migraine and actually feel better when wake up. They are too cheap not to try to see if they help you they did for me so far.

  64. For the Anonymous, Oct 6/16 comment about having permanent damage to the skin: I also experienced problems similar to an allergy reaction to the glue and tearing the skin.
What I discovered, as a result of reading some of the comments, you MUST use soap and water to remove these. Concentrating on the outer edge to start to remove it with soap. Otherwise, you will tear the skin.
Use aloe vera on the damaged skin and do not use chlorinated water on your face. Wash with spring water.
It is a shame this happened; it took me a few years to discover how to remove them properly without damaging the skin.

  66. I have horrible allergies which cause sinus congestion year around and I snore. Most nights, I'm a mouth breather because of it. I bought the large flesh colored Equate brand stips because they're cheaper. I'm not sure if it's helped my snoring bc you don't know your snoring when you're asleep, but I do know I'm breathing easier at night, YAY no more mouth breathing, and my head doesn't hurt as bad from the lack of oxygen so it's doing some good. The adhesive works a little too well, but my nose pores have never been cleaner lol. I didn't think to wet it first (DUH!) trying that in the morning. I also bought an air purifier to help with my allergies ($40 at Walmart). So for less than $50 I am breathing better than ever! I have used my purifier without my strip so I know it's not just the purifier.

  67. My husband and I both use these Breathe Right nasal strips every night. Snoring gone in both cases. Borderlina OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) gone. Amazing product... and cheap in the long run. Occasionally get a superficial redness in the area where the strip was when removed in the morning... a little massage to that area helps. Highly recommend for snorers and those with mild OSA!

  68. I tried these for the first time last nite as my right sinus is completely blocked when I lay down. Worked like a charm and I could actually breath through both sides of my nose and that hasn't happened for a very long time. The only thing that worries me is that they may irritate the skin around my nose with frequent use and I guess time will tell. The one time that I have used them didn't seem to bother my skin so I will definately be using them until such time it does.

  69. I have a deviated septum and began using Breathe Right Nasal Strips years ago. They have worked great as I was able to breathe throughout the night.

However as of approximately 7 - 8 mos. ago I began having a serious allergic reaction. I have a picture of what it did to my face and around my eyes to show what it looked like. Waking up to very swollen eyes like someone had injected water below them, very red hot itching skin under my eyes across my cheeks, and then turning into dry skin of which I used aloe lotion to help this issue. In addition, my skin was itching on my face and my back! I hadn't realized that it was the Breathe Right Nasal strips and I continued to use them! It would subside for a few days, but then again the extreme swelling/redness/burning and itching would come back. DUH! I tried to think of what I was using differently to make this happen? Changed clothes washing soap, face soap, threw face lotions away, etc, etc., blah, blah.
THEN, I saw a statement on the Breathe Right box about Latex. Whoa, could this be it? Could the Breathe Rights hurting me? As I need a strip to help me breathe, I found & purchased another brand from Walmart which works great! I took 3 boxes of Breathe Rights back to Costco, wearing sunglasses as I looked pretty scary!
I have not used the Breathe Rights for about 3 days now. I am in a process of elimination.

I wrote to GSK (Manufacturer)but all they said was they were sorry to learn that I encountered a problem while using Breathe Right Nasal Strips, etc. Same old boiler plate jargon that most companies give you when they are not willing to accept the cause of a problem. But like I said, I'm currently/still in the process of elimination.
But am pretty sure it was the Breathe Right Nasal Strips that caused this serious problem. The reason why I say 'serious' problem is because as of the past several mos. I have been experiencing other issues that may be related to this allergy.
As I began using these years ago with no prior problems, I believe there has been a change the Breathe Right chemical manufacture process. It could also be the actual material the strip is made of and/or in the nasal glue itself. Yet to be seen.

    Thanks for reading. Just beware.

    1. I was sorry to read about this very pronounced and upsetting reaction, apparently related to these strips, based on your opinion. I'm also sorry (but not surprised) that the company that makes this product showed no interest in helping you with a possible solution.

Hopefully you are better now. Definitely sounds like an allergic reaction.

Take care and thank you for the detailed description of what happened to you.

  70. I have bought these today and after an injury to my nose that caused bleeding and a sinus infection before that and a deviated septum on the right side... I thought I would try these strips. My eye lids areally swollen and headaches. So let's see if these help. Will review again tomorrow.

    1. speakingfromtheheart: don't forget to use lots of soapy water to remove the strip, especially if you have an injury.
I have stopped using these on a regular basis, but discovered a good skin treatment as a result of tearing off skin for the last time! I used aloe vera juice on a makeup pad/cotton pad to pat on the areas where the skin had peeled off and now I use aloe on all my face each time I wash and before applying moisturizer. My skin is looking pretty good and it healed my nose!

  71. Many thanks indeed to everyone who has commented on this review, and discussed their experiences of nasal strips leading to allergies or gradually removing the protective epidermal layer of skin on the nose leading to permanent damage.

Having experienced the great benefit of nasal strips myself, I figured there must be some way to reap the benefits without causing the damage.. So while I can't promise the method I've detailed below is entirely fool-proof and free of any negative outcome, I feel relatively confident you can cause the absolute minimum of damage to your nose if you follow the tips suggested.

The key is use of latex-free surgical tape, which uses a much less aggressive form of adhesive than all nasal strips seem to:

Procure a roll of latex-free micropore surgical tape
Procure breathe right nasal strips (cheap on ebay)

Attach a nasal strip to the roll of surgical tape.
Peel off the section of surgical tape with the nasal strip attached and cut away the excess tape around it.

Attach your DIY, latex-free, less aggressively adhesive nasal strip to your nose and feel the benefit!

Finally, when removing, I find keeping your nose under a running tap of warm water and gently peeling away the tape as the water breaks down the adhesive is the most superior method, but will probably come down to individual preference.

(Individuals with a latex allergy may wish to double or even triple-layer the surgical tape upon which the nasal strip is attached for good measure, and will probably need to use a warm, moist cloth to remove the DIY strip from the nose to, as best as possible, prevent the latex adhesive from contaminating the skin)

Just a suggestion I hope proves useful!
